This article examines particularities in teaching associated with criminology as well as with its inclusion in law studies degree programmes. The paper reflects on challenges from the perspective of higher education didactics, focusing on the criteria of relevance (as an overall view of the need, significance and effect of criminological teaching), learning outcomes and practical relevance. In addition to conceptual basics, the paper presents the results of an empirical study, identifies needs for action, and indicates possible areas where steps can be taken. Lecturers should be able to draw on these findings to develop their own implementation strategies for their courses.
