Abstract

This article discusses interactions between incarceration and the death of a close relative during incarceration. Such a loss is considered a risk factor for the likelihood of re-offending and at the same time poses a particular challenge to the detainees in dealing with their grief. The findings are based on a qualitative study. It shows that incarceration is a possible disruptive factor in the grief of the incarcerated. Another result, which at first seems paradoxical, is that experiencing grief during incarceration can promote the exit from delinquency by increasing the willingness to participate in treatment measures as well as initiating or strengthening a rethinking process. Conclusions for the work of social services in correctional facilities are drawn.
