Abstract

File analysis is a complex method that is central to empirical criminological research, although, from a methodological point of view, it receives comparatively little attention. Based on this observation, our article pursues two goals: firstly, to clarify the relevance of investigation file analysis for criminological research and discuss its methodological foundations and, secondly, to give well-founded recommendations for the planning and conducting of file analyses. The paper focuses on the quantitatively oriented analysis of prosecutors’ investigation files. The statements are predominantly based on experiences and findings from a study examining sexual violence against women.
