Abstract

This article examines the relationship between economic crimes and their victims. It demonstrates that the dichotomy of economic crimes as “crimes without victims” as well as “victims without crimes” can be resolved. The key to such resolution is the application of a multi-level approach that distinguishes different forms of victims while taking into account the elusive nature of the victim status. The article thereby illustrates a typology of economic crime victims. Further, a victim's perspective suggests that the concept of economic crime should be mapped out, starting from the key criterion of the abuse of trust.
